Wei Gen Hebei University of Technology A Teaching Mode for Advanced English through the Inquiry-based Learning Strategy under the Guidance of the Theory of Stylistic Analysis as the Terminal Purpose of Text Comprehension Wei Gen Hebei University of Technology

Introduction For the purpose of the cultivation of the learners’ creative thinking and creative ability, the feasibility of an Advanced English teaching mode based on the Inquiry-based learning strategies will be discussed under the guidance of a text teaching theory that regards the Stylistic Analysis of a text as the terminal teaching purpose. The teaching mode is divided into 3 stages as the Earlier Stage of Direction, the Medium Stage of Supervision and the Late Stage for Summing-up and Acceptance Check.

Chapter 1.        The Basic Guiding Theory for Advanced English Teaching: the Stylistic Analysis of a Text as the Terminal Purpose of the Text Comprehension

Mode 1. General Procedure for Stylistic Analysis Aesthetic value and ideological viewpoint analysis ↑ Stylistic feature analysis → → Content analysis Vocabulary ↓ Structure Coherence Theme Form analysis Register ↓ Varieties Genre Background Knowledge

Mode 2. Categories of Classification for Stylistic Analysis Irregularity: Deviation Incongruity Foregrounding Overregularity: Parallelism Deflection Regularity: the Preference of the Choice of the various Normal Expressions

The Classification of Incongruity and Deflection From the classification by Halliday (1981) such as Incongruity and Deflection, the Stylistic Analysis methods may be divided into 3 categories such as Deviation, Parallelism and the Preference of Choice of normal expressions, and in terms of the specific text analysis, each of the 3 categories can be further divided into various sub-categories, such as the analysis of phonology, graphology, vocabulary, grammar, semantics, and even register and genre etc. Thus, around the notion of whether for or against “Regularity” of various expressions, through certain text and statistics analysis, decisions or conclusions may be made to reveal the stylistic value of certain text.

Chapter 2. The Inquiry-based Learning Strategy and the Design of the Teaching Procedure

Definition: Regarding the stimulation of the learners’ initiative exploration, active innovation and active practice as the purpose, “Inquiry-based learning” for the Advanced English teaching is principally designed to center on “ learners” with the help of teachers’ instruction. Under the teacher’s guidance, by taking the approaches such as individual research and cooperative teamwork etc., the learners will follow the mode for the scientific research to conduct certain investigation work in their practical language learning.

The Design of Teaching Procedure: Following the mode of scientific research, as the teaching procedure, this teaching mode is divided into 3 stages, such as 1.Earlier Stage of Direction, 2.the Medium Stage of Supervision, 3.the Late Stage for Summing-up and Acceptance Check.

Chapter 3. Value for Practice ■ It greatly widened the learners’ knowledge about the basic reading theories ; ■ It made the learners basically predominate the methods and theories for scientific research ; ■ It enormously developed the learners’ autonomous learning capacity ; ■ It provides a life-long learning method for the learners to cultivate their creative ideology and creative ability, which will benefit them for their whole lives.

Thank You.
