Teaching – Assessment - Learning 2 Assessment: the bridge between teaching and learning Wiliam, 2011

Cook Guests 3 Formative vs. Summative Assessment

Rich assessment is the systematic gathering, interpreting, and responding to information about students. Teachers and students need to know what students know, how they know it, how they show it and what they need to know next. In this process, student agency, or involvement, is critical. 4 Assessment and the CBE CBE Guiding Principles of Assessment, p. 2

FROM Motivated students can learn Teacher is responsible of learning Role of classroom assessment is to compare students and give grades (summative) TO All students can learn Teacher and students share responsibility for learning Role of classroom assessment is to inform teacher and student adjustments (formative) 5 Assessment-Informed Classroom Climate Popham, 2011, p. 146

Keeping Parents Informed Over the course of this year, we need to talk about some key questions: o What is most important for you to know about how your child is doing at school? o Are there ways that teachers have communicated this information to you that you think are particularly effective? Ineffective? o Do you have other ideas about how we could better communicate? 10
