Summative: Formative resources: Interim Assessments: Tests used for end-of-year accountability and evaluation. Common Core State Standards specify K-12 expectations for college and career readiness All students leave high school college and career ready Teachers and schools have information and tools they need to improve teaching and learning. The Fellows are always grounding presentations with the SB Assessment System Graphic. The bar at the tope represents a five year implementation timeline; the red dot shows where we are in on that timeline and reminds the audience that most LEAs will likely take 3-5 years before full implementation of the CCSS and the assessments. Formative resources: Educator resources that support measuring student learning in real-time during instruction Interim Assessments: Tests used for timely and periodic information based on local needs/goals

A Comprehensive Plan for Student Success LCFF Prop. 30 Resources New Standards New Assessments Support College and Career Readiness Outcomes

Smarter Balanced Mathematics Threshold Scale Scores Remember to share with educators that one of the benefits of the new summative assessment is that we can measure progress over time. There is a handout to go with this slide that has both ELA and math. Uploaded to the RAN Smartsheet.

Summative Reporting Timeline Go through the timeline and caution about the electronic results being preliminary and why.

Preliminary On-line Reporting System (ORS) Timeline Let’s talk first about the preliminary electronic reports. The process, and the types of reports that are available. Preliminary student scores and aggregate reports available within four weeks of a student completing both parts of the test.

Individual Student Reports and Data Files Paper reports for parents and data files available within eight weeks of the end of the LEA’s testing window.

Important Reminder The data available in the CAASPP ORS represents partial and preliminary results that are not appropriate for public release. As a real-time system, results will change as additional data is received and relevant appeals and rescores are processed. These changes may result in final scores being higher or lower than the preliminary results posted to this system. The California Department of Education (CDE) recommends that data from the ORS only be released publically following the state level release of assessment data that occurs in August.

Assessments: An Academic Check-up CAASPP replaces the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. Initial tests in English-language arts/literacy, mathematics and legacy (CST) science. Other subject areas will be added over time. Also includes tests for special student populations (English learners; students with disabilities). Subject Area Grades Tested Test Type Test Name English-Language Arts Grades 3-8 and 11 Computer-adaptive Smarter Balanced – NEW! Mathematics Science Grades 5, 8, and 10 Paper and Pencil California Standards Test

A System Designed to Help Teachers Computer-based Wider variety of questions, tasks and problems Allows students to demonstrate writing, critical thinking, problem-solving More timely information for teachers and schools Computer-adaptive More accurate information about individual student performance Performance tasks Allows students to apply their thinking to real-world problems Student supports Allowing English learners and students with disabilities to demonstrate their knowledge

California’s New Student Score Reports Dynamic report: Text changes based on grade and student performance Overall scores for each subject range from 2,000 to 3,000 Performance within one of four levels: Standard exceeded Standard met Standard nearly met Standard not met Review full sample student score reports here

Overall Score at a Glance (ELA) Straightforward, easy to read descriptions Results comparable across schools, districts and states Dynamic text based on student performance Bar shows range of likely performance Find more information about achievement levels here

Overall Score at a Glance (Math) Straightforward, easy to read descriptions Results comparable across schools, districts and states Dynamic text based on student performance Bar shows range of likely performance

Demonstrating specific skills English language arts/literacy Reports performance within one of three levels: Above Standard At or Near Standard Below Standard

Demonstrating specific skills Mathematics Reports performance within one of three levels: Above Standard At or Near Standard Below Standard

Indicator of College Readiness (Grade 11) Cal State and participating Community Colleges will use results to determine Early Assessment Program status. Allows qualifying students to avoid placement exams. Provides those who need additional work information about areas of focus for senior year.

Federally Required Legacy Science Test (CST) California Standards Test for Science administered in grades 5, 8 and 10. Not aligned to Next Generation Science Standards. New assessment in development.

Important Reminder Scores and achievement levels from the Smarter Balanced assessments cannot and should not be compared with data from the STAR Program/CSTs. Different standards are being assessed. Different assessment methods are being used. Different levels of cognitive rigor are being assessed.

Patience and Persistence Real progress takes time and effort. Primary purpose of testing in California is to support learning rather than to impose high-stakes consequences. California is focused on helping students succeed in the long run, achieving their dreams of college and career.
