Presentation transcript:

Lon-Capa 7th HW assignment due today, 11/11, by 5 pm. 5th Quiz due Sunday, 11/13 by 10 pm. It will open at 5 pm today.

Three Big Topics Stoichiometry: information on “what” happens; allows us to determine amounts of reactants and products. Thermodynamics: information on “why” reactions happen; allows us to make predictions about whether a reaction will occur. Kinetics: information on “how” reactions happen (mechanisms); relates to the speed of reactions.

Thermodynamics vs. Kinetics

Mechanisms Series of elementary steps. Must be chemically reasonable Must have the correct stoichiometry. That is, the steps must add up to the overall reaction. Must be chemically reasonable How can we tell this? Cannot prove but can support empirically. Must agree with the overall rate law.

Effective Collisions Require Sufficient Energy

Effective Collisions and Temperature

Catalyzed Pathways Have a Lower Activation Energy

Molecular Orientation Matters

Questions to Consider… What do we mean by rate? How can we measure rate? How do we determine the order of a reaction? How do we calculate the rate constant, k? How do we calculate the activation energy, Ea, of a reaction?
