NFPA 101 Occupancy Specific Requirements FSE 101 – Fire Prevention

Outline General Requirements (Section 7.1) Components (Section 7.2)

New vs. Existing New Existing Final call and requirements up to AHJ New Construction Occupancy Change (not occupant change) Existing A building erected or officially authorized prior to the effective date of the adoption of this edition of the code by the agency or jurisdiction [101:3.3.32.5] Final call and requirements up to AHJ

Determining Requirements Determine the occupancy classification by referring to the occupancy definitions in Chapter 6. Determine if the building or structure is new or existing. Determine the occupant load. Determine the hazard of the contents.

Determining Requirements (cont) Refer to applicable occupancy chapter of the code, Chapters 12-42. See also chapters 1-4 and 6-11 as needed for general requirements. Determine any occupancy subclassification or special use conditions (day care, healthcare, hotels, etc.) Proceed through the applicable occupancy chapter to verify compliance.

Determining Requirements (cont) Where two or more requirements apply, the occupancy specific chapter will apply. Where two or more occupancy chapters apply, the most restrictive will control.

Example A jewelry retail sales store occupying all of the 12th floor of a multitenant structure uses 5000 ft2 (95%) for sales. It was in place prior to the implementation of this code.

Example (cont) Existing Mercantile (Chapter 36) According to Chapter 36, this is a Class B mercantile facility. Don’t forget high rise requirements (Chapter 11) Chapter 36 will refer reader mostly to chapters 1-4 and 7-11. Therefore, chapters 1-4, 7-11, and 36 will contain the applicable requirements for this facility.
