Quasi vitamins: Orotic acid Domina Petric, MD

Introduction Orotic acid was isolated in the late 1940s from distillers’ dried solubles and was called, for a while, vitamin B13. Metabolic functions Orotic acid is biosynthesized from N-carbamylphosphate by dehydration (via dihydroorotase), which is oxidized (via orotate reductase) to orotate. Health effects Orotic acid might have hypocholesterolemic effect: inhibition of hepatic cholesterol synthesis at the level of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase.
