XYZ AFFAIR – Foreign French were angry about the Jay’s Treaty. Charles Talleyrand – French Prime Minister

France began attacking and kidnapping US sailors and ships

They were met by secret agents instead who were known as X, Y, Z. American officials were sent to France to meet with the French foreign minister American diplomats refused to pay the bribe. They were met by secret agents instead who were known as X, Y, Z. $$$ They demanded a bribe of $250,000, a loan of $10 million, and a public apology to the French. This caused an unofficial war between France and the US.

Alien & Sedition Acts – Domestic Alien Act: President could imprison or deport citizens of other countries residing in the U.S. Sedition Act: It was against the law to criticize the government.

Kentucky & Virginia Resolutions If a state declared a law unconstitutional, that law would be “null and void” Fought the Sedition Act because it was unconstitutional and went against freedom of speech The belief was that the states had the right to declare a law constitutional Written by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and other republicans No agreement was made
