“Reconstruction was two steps forward, one step back.” “Some proposed laws weren’t passed simply because they were proposed by a black legislator.” “Reconstruction was two steps forward, one step back.” “The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were a stepping stone toward true equality.” While there were quite a few black legislators, the numbers were never proportional to the population. “Reconstruction simply replaced slavery with segregation.” “A government that cannot protect its people is a failure.” The decline in the number of black legislators shows that Southerners’ minds weren’t changed. “The Jim Crow laws an the KKK were created out of retaliation.” “Reconstruction brought the states back together but it didn’t achieve equality.”
