ARTICLE 17 REPORTING: SUMMARY OF MAIN RESULTS 4th Meeting Coordination Group for Biodiversity and Nature 12 February 2009 ARTICLE 17 REPORTING: SUMMARY OF MAIN RESULTS Carlos Romão Manager, ETC/BD
Overview of this presentation Recalling article 17 reports Some issues with data Article 17 Technical Report Some examples of analysis done Conclusions
… recalling Article 17 report (i) Conservation status of 216 habitats (Annex I) 1 182 species (Annexes II, IV, V) For each biogeographical region (7) and marine region (4) EU 25, period 2001-2006 Background information: range, area, population, future prospects, structure & functions Trends, pressures & threats
… recalling Article 17 report (ii) In total Member States delivered: 2 756 reports of conservation status for habitats 6 064 reports of conservation status for species Main results summarised in National summaries & checklists http://circa.europa.eu/Public/irc/env/monnat/library?l=/habitats_reporting/reporting_2001-2007/ms-reports_summaries&vm=detailed&sb=Title All data available at http://biodiversity.eionet.europa.eu/article17
… recalling Article 17 report (iii) Regional assessments made by ETC/BD 701 assessments for habitats 2 240 assessments for species MS & ETC assessments submitted to an 'on-line' public consultation Data sheets made for each assessment Audit trails made when needed
Some data issues (i) High number of 'unknowns', mainly for species Trends & trend magnitude: very little reported Marine species & habitats: the big ‘dark’ blue Quality of data needs improvement: very little is coming from monitoring Further harmonisation & standardisation needed
Some data issues (ii) Example: 'density' of habitats (number per grid cell) from distribution maps provided by MS … LIMITS TO DATA QUALITY AND PRECISION HAS TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT TO AVOID MAJOR ERRORS IN ANALYSIS
Art.17 Technical Report All data and information available at the Article 17 website A series of papers summarising main statistics and analysis will be available soon An overview of Article 17 reporting Habitats and species covered by the Art 17 report Data completeness quality & coherence Introduction to the MS assessments Checklists Explanatory Note Consultation Notes Consultation statistics Introduction to Biogeographical assessments Overview of biogeographical assessments Overview of conservation status Some specific analysis Measures for strict protection regime Control systems for incidental killing Taking and exploitation Annex V species
Some analysis (i) Habitats Species
Some analysis (ii) Conservation status of HABITATS & biogeographical regions
Some analysis (iii) Conservation status of SPECIES & biogeographical regions
Some analysis (iv) Conservation status of HABITAT GROUPS
Some analysis (v) Conservation status of SPECIES GROUPS
Some analysis (vi)
Some analysis (vii)
Thank you for your attention In conclusion… A baseline about conservation status is now (finally!) available Limitations due to data quality (monitoring & harmonisation) and gaps Further analysis possible Good potential for assessments Caution in drawing conclusions… Thank you for your attention
