Using Energy and Material Resources Chapter 14 Lesson 3 Using Energy and Material Resources

Skim: Write 3 Questions that come to mind. Then… Define Vocabulary: Review- global warming New- conservation, recycling, particulate Academic- register

Resources in the U. S. -choose 5 resources and locate them on the map Resources in the U.S.-choose 5 resources and locate them on the map. Use colors/symbols to show where each resource is located. Make a legend for your map.

Complete the table to identify material used to manufacture common objects. Plastic Chemical Pencil Resource Oil Petroleum Wood, minerals, metal

Summarize What is recycling is and why is it important? Recycling is the reprocessing of an item or natural resource. Recycling uses less energy and helps material and energy resources last longer.

Summarize It Summarize the main ideas of the above sections with two bullet points!

Identify and describe damage caused by pollutants produced by fossil fuels. Damaging Effects Oil Spills Harm marine life Carbon dioxide Contributes to global warming Sulfur dioxide Forms acid rain Gasoline exhaust Creates smog in urban areas Particulates Can damage lungs

Identify six ways to conserve gasoline. 1. Drive cars with better gas mileage. 2. Drive smaller cars. 3. Carpool. 4. Ride a bicycle. 5. Walk short distances. 6. Use buses or trains.

Classify types of alternative energy and their effects on the environment.

Analyze what will happen if nonrenewable energy resources are used at current levels over time. Complete the cause-and –effect diagram. Nonrenewable resources continue to be used at current levels. Shortages of energy are likely to occur in the future.

Define conservation, and explain why it is useful. Conservation is the preservation and careful management of the environment, including natural resources. Conservation helps prevent shortages by reducing the amount of energy used.
