From Library to Learning Commons

What is a Learning Commons?

A learning space available to individuals and groups to use for multiple purposes. Group work, collaboration, PD, inquiry

Large group Author visit

Small group One on one

Displays/Clubs Pumpkin Decorating

And everything in between.

A noticeable shift from content consumption to knowledge and concept CREATION through the exploration of multiple perspectives.

Think of it as a shift from the dining room where food (knowledge) is passively consumed to the kitchen where knowledge is created (and is sometimes messy)! – Education Matters

Why? A new culture of learning. Everyone is a learner and stakeholder. Our students have grown up with the internet and supporting technology. Information is immediate. Learning has moved beyond the classroom. Learning has become collaborative.

4 Elements Physical Space – a welcoming space with flexible learning/working areas used for different functions and groupings. Virtual Space – learning is not limited to school hours. Experimental Space – allows students to become involved in knowledge building. Create and use maker stations. Open Commons – open and collaborative space for “just in time” learning.
