Composition of Matter Essential Question: What is the difference between substances and mixtures?

Objective: Students will learn what matter is. Students will learn the differences between substances and mixtures.

What is Matter? Definition: anything that has mass and takes up space. Ex: You!

#1: Pure substance Definition: types of matter with a fixed composition that CANNOT be separated by physical means. Ex: Elements and compounds

Examples of elements and compounds Come up with one example for an element and one example of what is a compound.

Substance continued…. Types of substances: Elements: substance made up of ATOMS that are the simplest substances that can not be broken down. Ex: Oxygen (O2 )

Substances continued….. Compound: Atoms of two or more elements combined with each other. Ex: Water (H2O) Ex: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

#2 Mixtures Definition: material made up of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means.

Mixtures continued…. Heterogeneous: mixture in which different materials can be easily distinguished. Ex:pizza, fruit, salad

Mixtures continued…. Homogeneous: Mixture in which two or more substances are uniformly spread out. Ex: Vinegar, salt water, Ice tea
