Presentation transcript:

I Love Engineering! Name of Mentor Title slide can have a fun picture of you on the job – having FUN demonstrating from the get-go that this is something you are passionate about! Break the mold – it`s not going to be a picture of you in an office with a calculator and a lot of boring paper.

Hi Everyone! About me My career About Engineering Why does engineering matter? What are the characteristics of an engineer? What do I do exactly? This is a rough sample outline of your presentation... You can call it “outline” or “Hi Everyone” or whatever you want to call it.... Just have fun with it and feel free to add photos.

About Me Name Education Job Title Who I Work For Where I Live Things I Like to Do Have more fun with this slide – show a photo of you doing something you love that isn`t necessarily related to your career. You doing a sport – or just outside having fun. This makes you a real live person that kids can relate to.

My Career Why did I pick this career? How did I get to where I am now? What were some of the key challenges I had to overcome? What do I love about my career? How does my career contribute to the community/world? Tell your story. Why are you passionate about what you do. What obstacles did you overcome. Was math hard in school? How did you get past that? Again, throw a picture in the slide!

About Engineering Real world applications that demonstrate why engineering is important Tools that engineers use Fun things engineers get to do (be outdoors, discover remote areas... Etc) Introduce your field in a fun way. Show a little video if you want... or photos of structures.... Or talk about what might be in the very room you are in.... Or lead the kids through a brainstorm of problems they may encounter in their daily lives that an engineer would solve. Edit the slide accordingly.

Why Does Engineering Matter? We solve problems We make the world a better place Engineering is everywhere Edit this slide any way you like – but think about the key message you are trying to reinforce – that your career matters in some way.

What Makes a Great Engineer? Creative Innovative Curious Loves outdoors - Think of personal as well as professional attributes of someone in your career. This helps to make your career accessible to the youth. Take this opportunity to engage the youth. Ask questions like who here loves the outdoors? You can be an engineer!

What Do I Do, Exactly? I design motors for airplanes.. My motors use hardly any fuel... My motors do not pollute the sky... You can use as many slides as you like to talk about what you do.... If you are not sure how to talk about what you do, our instructors will help you brainstorm ideas. Introduce your career by placing it in context that youth can relate – for example I help design the motor so it can operate without polluting the environment

More About My Job Talk about HOW you do your job – for example.... I work in a big building with a lot of machinery. I interact with other engineers who also love what they do Together we brainstorm ways to make our machines work better We experiment and make mistakes!

Check Out These tools Talk about the tools you use

...more slides on what you do... Keep reinforcing why you think it’s fun!

Related Activity Think about what you can bring in to hand around (show and tell) Think about what kids can do to simulate doing your job (Actua instructors can help brainstorm this with you) Think about what related equipment or clothing might help authenticate the experience (hard hat, hammer?) and see if it is possible to bring this stuff in.

Questions? Be open to questions Always remember key message – this field is open to anyone and that challenges can be overcome
