Plants VS Animals

Despite both being eukaryotic cells, plant cells and animal cells have some major differences PLANT VS. ANIMAL PLANT CELLS Cell wall to provide support Chloroplasts, makes food Very large vacuole Generally a well defined shape ANIMAL CELLS Centrioles, aid cell division Small vacuoles Irregular shaped

Refresher: What organelle provides the cell with energy? What organelle is the site of photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis – our favorite thing in biology ever What happens? Energy from sunlight converts water and carbon dioxide to glucose (sugar) and oxygen Where does it happen? In plants (and green algae) inside the chloroplast

Chloroplasts The site of Photosynthesis, which plants use to make food from sunlight, Carbon Dioxide and Water. Only found in plants, and algae

Photosynthesis – the reaction 6CO2 + 6H2O+  C6H12O6 + 6O2

How does Photosynthesis Work? Light Energy is captured by chlorophyll in the chloroplast, which is used to combine Carbon Dioxide and Water to make Glucose and Oxygen (as a byproduct).

Transfer to consumers In order for consumers to receive the energy from the sun to fuel their own cell processes, they must eat producers or other consumers that already have this energy in the form of glucose.

Cellular respiration What happens? Where does it happen? Glucose is converted into usable energy for the cell (ATP) Where does it happen? In ALL EUKARYOTES inside the mitochondria.. Both plants and animals

What is the process? Oxygen is combined with Glucose in the Mitochondria. ATP Energy is produced as well as Water and Carbon Dioxide (as a byproduct).

Cellular Respiration – the reaction C6H12O6 + 6O2  6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP

What is ATP? Cellular energy Used for all cell activities Adenosine triphosphate Break one bond to release energy Ex: Muscle cell contracting

Summarizer: How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration dependent on one another?
