Learning Goals By the end of the lesson, students will: Identify different ways to connect to the Internet. Compare the services provided by a variety of Internet service providers. Be able to make an informed decision on what Internet services would fit individual needs and budget.

INTRODUCTION How are you able to connect to the Internet from home? Do you have Internet Connection at home? If so, who provides this service? Do you have wi-fi? What is your wi-fi name? Is it protected? https://How the Internet works?

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS A BUSINESS THAT HAS A POINT OF PRESENCE CONNECTION OFFERS TEMPORARY CONNECTIONS TO INDIVIDUALS AND COMPANIES FOR A FEE DEPENDING ON YOUR NEEDS, THERE ARE MANY ISPs TO CHOOSE FROM (see www.canadianisp.com) Includes Internet, browse the world wide web, and email Many different ISPs. On website, search is over 170 ISPs for Toronto area. You are probably only familiar with a handful of companies. More mainstream because they are accessible, affordable and of course marketed to you. - Bell and Rogers may have more restrictions than you require, ie. Limit bandwidth (amount of data that can be transferred by connection)

HOW ISPs CONNECT

HOW ISPs CONNECT TO THE INTERNET DIAL-UP (Including High Speed) DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) CABLE WIRELESS & SATELLITE ISP connections Various services available through many different companies

DIAL-UP Requires a computer and a phone-line (most computers have built in modem) Dial a telephone number Connect to a phone line through your ISP Allows you access to the Internet Modem – used to send digital data over a phone line Example: Bell will give you a dial-up access phone number to connect to the internet

HIGH SPEED DIAL UP SAME AS REGULAR DIAL UP PROVIDER USES AN ACCELERATION SERVER THAT PROVIDES A BROADBAND CONNECTION TO QUICKLY SEARCH THE INTERNET FOR THE SERVER THAT HOSTS THE PAGE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Dial up sound

Dial up ISPs (including High Speed) Advantages Inexpensive Can pay as you go using general ID Disadvantages Slow overall speed Ties up your phone line Low quality data transfers Example - Some computer games will not work because the transfer rate is too slow.

BROADBAND a wide band of frequencies that is available to transmit information. allows more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time SO THE USER IS ABLE TO VIEW OR DOWNLOAD ON THE INTERNET LARGER FILES

DSL (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE) REQUIRES A COMPUTER, MODEM, AND A REGULAR PHONE LINE ALLOWS YOU TO USE THE PHONE WHILE ON THE INTERNET Uses fibre optics/copper wiring EXAMPLE: BELL FIBE - Offers different services based on speeds Bell Fibe Still using your phone line, using the copper wiring, but doesn’t tie up the line. Because on a higher frequency than voice. Modems are usually rented from the company, some may have buy option See bell pamphlet, read through various offerings

DSL Access

DSL Access Advantages ‘Always on’ connection Faster than dial-up can use existing phone line Can pay in a Bundle with phone/TV from ISP Disadvantages: The service is not available everywhere. More expensive than Dial-up

CABLE ACCESS REQUIRES A COMPUTER, MODEM AND YOUR CABLE CONNECT THROUGH YOUR CABLE LINE TO A SERVER EXAMPLE: ROGERS IGNITE, COGECO https://Rogers commercial Look at Rogers pamphlet, read 4 different plans

CABLE ACCESS

CABLE ACCESS Advantages Disadvantages Faster than dial-up Does not tie up phone lines Can download larger files Can pay in a Bundle with phone/TV from ISP Disadvantages More expensive than dial-up Cable vs. DSL speeds are up for debate. Studies show it is also dependant on the company you are using and how they are connected to the Internet.

Wireless/Satellite Access Requires a wireless modem or router May have free access, paid access, or password access Antenna on modem sends a signal through airwaves 3G & 4G Networks also available through providers for cellphones and tablets Satellite Access is also available for people in remote locations Wireless, see Bell pamphlet, only available in Canada SATELLITE ACCESS IS USED BY LARGER COMPANIES. And for remote users who require high-speed access EXAMPLE: CANADA’S TELEVISION STATIONS

Wireless/Satellite Access Advantages Portable and convenient Can also use on Cellular phone, tablet, gaming device, laptop, etc. Disadvantages Can be costly Service is not available in all areas Personal Digital Assistant Remote User, attaches a satellite receptor dish, similar to satellite tv to their house/business
