The Principles of Light

To have light, you must have s light source. A light source is anything that produces light. Examples of light sources:

What happens when light hits an object? Light bounces off (reflected) object. We see things because of reflected light.

We see ourselves in a mirror because of reflection. of Light

We see colors because that color is reflected off the object. Why do we see color? We see colors because that color is reflected off the object. We see blue because blue light is reflected off the object. All other colors are absorbed.

The light that hits an object is called the angle of incidence. The light that bounces off the object is called the angle of reflection.

This is called the law of reflection. Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection Reflection of Light This is called the law of reflection.

The bending of light is refraction. When light passes thru transparent objects (water, glass, etc.), the light is refracted (bent). The bending of light is refraction. When light passes thru water, it’s refracted (bent).

What is Refraction of Light? When light travels thru a prism, the refraction of white light forms the spectrum. The colors of the spectrum are the colors of the rainbow…

Refraction of Light Experiment The spectrum – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet (ROY G. BIV) make up the colors of the rainbow (video). Refraction of Light Experiment

White light is madeup of all the colors of the spectrum. Black is the absence of color (all colors are absorbed). Refraction of Light Experiment

Three things can happen when light hits an object. If the object is transparent, the light will pass through it.

If the object is translucent, light looks fuzzy it passes through it. If the object is opaque, the light will not pass thru the object and is reflected.
