Properties of Light When light strikes an object it is:
 All light is a form of energy. That’s because light “radiates”, or spreads out, in all directions from its source. (Such as a light bulb or star).

Behavior of Light. Getting the Idea Light is another form of energy. You can see all the objects around you because the sun (or a lamp) is sending out.
 Is the ability to cause changes in matter.  Energy can transform, or change, from one form into another.  Energy is never used up.

Presentation transcript:

The ability to cause changes in matter and make things happen Energy The ability to cause changes in matter and make things happen

Heat/Thermal Energy Energy produced by moving particles in matter; also called thermal energy.

Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy is the energy of motion. When you kick a football, you give mechanical energy to the football to make it move.

States of Energy: Kinetic and Potential Energy Kinetic Energy is the energy of motion. Potential Energy is stored energy.

Electricity A form of energy that is produced when particles of matter are charged.

A rapid back-and-forth movement that produces sound Vibration A rapid back-and-forth movement that produces sound

A form of energy produced by vibrating objects Sound A form of energy produced by vibrating objects

Solar Energy Energy from the sun.

Light Energy Energy that you can see; light travels in a straight line until it hits another object

LighT ENERGY

Transparent Light is transmitted when it passes through transparent objects.

Translucent Some light is transmitted when it passes through translucent material. Often objects appear blurry on other side of the object.

Opaque No or little light is transmitted through opaque objects.

Reflection Refraction

Prism Convex Lens A lens that is thicker in the center and thinner at the edges, a shape that bends light inward.

Prism Concave Lens A lens that is thinner in the center and thicker at the edges, a shape that bends light outward.
