How To Work On Sounds Follow the ear-training guide on page 71. Try producing the sound by itself. Try the sound in single words. Try the sound in phrases and sentences. Become aware of the position and movements of your articulators. Practice for a short period each day. Gather your own practice materials.

Special Speech Problems Common to find some phonemes misarticulated. Misarticulations are omissions, substitutions, and distortions. E.g. ask and axe E.g. soap and thoap E.g. well and wull Soap, not Thoap!

Ear-Training Exercise Work with someone who pronounces sound correctly. Have your partner cover his or her mouth in some way so that you won’t be getting visual clues. Always go from an easier performance task to a more difficult task.

Recognition Train your ear to recognize whether the target sound occurs in a word spoken by the partner. Train your ear to recognize where the target sound is in a word (beginning, middle, end) when spoken by the partner.

Discrimination Train your ear to distinguish between correct and incorrect productions of the target sound as produced by your partner in random order, and be able to point out and distinguish the correct from the incorrect version.
