Connection between the Number of Hurricanes and their Intensities Adam Erdmann Environmental Data Analysis Professor Wang

Purpose of my Project I want to see how sunspots and storm intensities were related. If there was not much to find, I wanted to find out: How each of the intensities were related to each other Along with how they related to the total number of storms and the average intensity during that year

Methodology Correlation Coefficient Periodograms Are there any direct correlations? Periodograms Are there any frequencies that stand out? Crossspectral analysis Do any of the frequencies relate? If so, what are the phase angles?

Correlations Correlation between the number of sunspots and intensity, average intensity and number of storms R = 0.0459 0.0793 -0.0769 -0.0282 0.1273 0.1748 0.0788 0.0877 P = 0.5677 0.3234 0.3383 0.7255 0.1122 0.0285 0.3264 0.2747 Correlation between the intensity and the average intensity Ri2 = -0.3717 -0.1898 0.2108 0.4844 0.4783 0.2501 Pi2 = 0.0000 0.0173 0.0080 0.0000 0.0000 0.0016

More Correlations Correlation between the intensity and the next intensity immediately following Ri1 = 0.2152 -0.0727 0.1081 0.2407 0.0746 Pi1 = 0.0068 0.3657 0.1779 0.0024 0.3531 Correlation between number of storms and each intensity Ri = 0.7895 0.4817 0.2634 0.4447 0.3970 0.4102 Pi = 1.0e-003 * 0.0000 0.0000 0.8572 0.0000 0.0003 0.0001

Periodograms Tropical Storm Category 1 Category 2

Periodograms Category 3 Category 4 Category 5

Periodograms Total number of storms Average Intensity Total Sunspots

Crossspectral analysis Sunspots & Tropical Storms Category 1

Crossspectral analysis Sunspots & Category 2 Category 3

Crossspectral analysis Sunspots & Category 4 Category 5

Crossspectral analysis Sunspots & Total number of storms Average Intensity

Conclusion The correlation coefficient reveals no direct correlation between sunspots and intensity Despite this, the cross spectral analysis reveals that the sunspots and intensities have their largest peak at roughly the same frequency meaning that there could likely be some relationship The correlation coefficient reveals a good relationship between each intensity and the total number of storms
