Tudor Food Most Tudor people ate quite well. The rich people had better food than the poor people.

Meat and Fish The main part of each meal was meat. They ate: Beef Lamb Pork Poultry Rabbit Deer Goat Wildfowl Rich people even ate swans! Everyone, by law, ate fish, not meat, on Fridays and during Lent.

Vegetables and Fruit Until the 1580’s, vegetables and fruit were less popular. By the end of the century there were many more vegetable and fruit gardens, and many new varieties were available, but only for the rich. From Europe came raspberries and gooseberries. From America came peppers, pumpkins and potatoes.

Bread The rich ate bread made of flour. The poor people ate bread made out of rye or ground acorns. Butter and Eggs Rich people would not eat these because they thought that they were poor people’s food.

Sugar This came from Asia and was very expensive and hard to get. Honey was more usually used to sweeten food. Drink The rich drank wine from France and Spain. The poor people drank ale, cider or buttermilk.
