GRAIN LEGUMES AND CEREALS FOR DRYLAND PRODUCTION IN MOZAMBIQUE: RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS AND NEEDED ACTIONS February 2018

INTRODUCTION Fig 1. Mozambique Rainfall Pattern Dry lands cover important cropping systems in Mozambique mainly in Tete, Manica, Sofala and Gaza Provinces (fig 1). Grain legumes are among the 7 priority value chains according to Operational Framework for Agricultural Development (2015- 2019). Sorghum and Pearl millet are the 3th and 4th most important cereals after maize and rice, respectivelly.

Cereals and legumes production (MASA, 2017) Crops Observed 2015-16 Planned 2016-17 Area (ha) Production (ton) Production (ton) Maize 1.472.202 1.794.000 1.950.000 2.346.000 sorghum 309.926 240.000 323.300 249.600 Millet 58.882 34.000 60.700 35.000 Rice 237.410 331.410 287.000 402.000 Wheat 15.623 17.088 15.700 17.100 Total Cereal 2.094.043 2.416.498 2.636.700 3.049.700 Beans 727.020 404.384 778.000 432.700 Groundnut 457.571 251.616 498.900 274.300 Total legumes 1.184.591 656.000 1.276.900 707.000

MAJOR PRODUCTION CONTRAINTS Limited access of farmers to high yielding adapted varieties; Limited access to seeds and seed delivery system; Information on crop management not well delivered; Biotic (pests and diseases) and abiotic (drought and low soil fertility) constraints; Not suitable credit systems for small farmers.

OPORTUNITIES FOR GLDC IN MOZAMBIQUE High demand in a domestic and international market; Need for more protein food for nutrition security (43% of children suffers malnutrition); Need to help farmers to fill the growing food industry and market demand; Growing of private sector participation; Youth farmers incubation programs; Well established network of partners Availaibility of technologies (high yielding varieties and crop management pratices).

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS SORGHUM 10 varieties released (2000 and 2011) PEARL MILLET 3 varieties released in (2000) MAIZE 11 Drought tolerant maize (4 OPVs & 7 hybrids ) released from 2011 to 2016

Major Achievements of Last 7 years

RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES Increase the contribution of GLDC to food security and nutrition through the increase of its productivity and marketing value ; Identify and promote a sustainable system of seed production and delivery of high-yielding varieties adapted to different agroecological zones.

EXISTING EXPERTISE ON RESEARCH COMPONENTS

WAY FORWARD Need to consolidate gains and scale up results; Massive dissemination campaign; More partnerships to go step further and to move faster to make farmers benefit from the available technologies; Address emerging research issues.
