Multiplying Fractions Target: Find products of expressions involving two fractions.

Multiplying Fractions For any numbers a, b, c and d:

Example 1 Find the value of . Find the product of the numerators and denominators. Simplify.

Example 2 Find the value of . Find a common factor of one numerator and one denominator. The GCF of 4 and 8 is 4. Simplify by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 4. Multiply the numerator and denominator.

Example 3 Sandeep had cup of yogurt. She put of the yogurt into a smoothie. What fraction of a cup of yogurt did she use in the smoothie? Write the problem. Divide 4 and 8 by 4. Divide 3 and 9 by 3. Multiply. Sandeep put cup of yogurt in her smoothie.

Exit Problems Find the value of . Sandra bought pound of carrots. She used of them for a soup. How many pounds of carrots did she use for the soup? Tyce hit of the baseballs he was pitched during batting practice. Mason hit of the number of pitches that Tyce hit. What fraction of pitches did Mason hit?

Communication Prompt Do you find it easy to simplify before multiplying fractions? Why or why not?
