UDL to Solve Problem Kelly Rowe March 12, 2014

Background I am currently teaching 23 students grouped heterogeneously in a first grade classroom. The class includes students at a variety of levels; some are reading on a late 2nd/early 3rd grade level while some are performing at a first grade level. In addition I have 2 ELL students and 1 student on a 504 plan with diagnosed ADHD. During our reading/language arts block, teachers are encouraged to put the students into small groups for instruction. Usually the students are grouped homogeneously for small group instruction on their reading level. Small groups are compromised of 5-6 students. At this time, I am usually the only adult in the room with the students. It is a challenge to ensure that everyone is working productively and independently while I am working with a small group. It is also my first year teaching first grade after teaching 4th grade for 11 years. In the past I have taught homogeneous reading groups, or have taught a heterogeneous group with the assistance of another teacher.

Listening Center 1-3 students at a time Book and tape provided Feedback form will be completed afterwards

Writing Opportunities Word Work cards give MANY choices! Work on Writing center comes stocked with all the needed supplies!

Schedules tell students what they need to do.

VIP Folder Activities the students are “Working On” are placed on the left. “Finished Work” goes on the right. Each day, students begin by checking in their “Working On” side.

Reading Time! Read to Self Log Use Story Wands and Comprehension Cubes when reading with a friend.

The Daily 5 Calendar is completed each day. Students code the calendar to show what they completed each day: R = Read to Self RS = Read with Someone W = Writing WW = Word Work L = Listen to Reading Mrs. Rowe (or Miss Grossman) = indicates time working with a given teacher.

Daily 5 Chart The students can monitor their on-task behaviors during independent work time.
