Developmental Studies Center Devstu.org Being A Writer Developmental Studies Center Devstu.org Purchased by SJC district to help develop great writers Implemented at Cunningham Creek Elementary School

The program’s goal A yearlong curriculum for grades K-2 with two goals: Writing: to develop the creativity and skills of a writer Social development: to develop the social and ethical values of a responsible person

What does the program offer? Incorporates listening and speaking, personal writing expression and writing for varied tasks and purposes while learning conventions and grammar

Students are invited to Write daily Take pride in their writing Use prompts to discuss what they think and why Participate in writing conferences with teachers and peers Formulate and defend opinions and arguments in their writing

6 Specific Genres Ask your child’s teacher what genre they are currently studying so you can reinforce that skill at home Personal narrative Fictional narrative Expository nonfiction Functional writing Letter writing Opinion writing Poetry

Focus on Social Development Examples of skills students learn include: Listening to each other Solving problems together Explaining and/or justifying their own thinking Including others in work and discussions Sharing books and materials fairly Reaching agreement and making fair decisions Giving and receiving feedback gracefully Expressing interest in one another’s writing
