Strategy development Next steps The process so far Finalise Employability Strategy. Seek UEB endorsement. Broader approval. Dissemination of strategy. Implementation and evaluation. The process so far Agreement on a definition of Employability. Consultation on current good practice in departments. Initial draft based on consultation outcomes. 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Employability @ TUOS “A set of achievements, skills, understanding and personal attributes that make them more likely to gain employment, be successful in their chosen occupations and become active citizens” (Derived from the HEA’s definition) 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Some points from the strategy Develop opportunities within the curriculum for students to use their skills in practical contexts.  Support opportunities outside the curriculum to gain work experience and to participate in volunteering initiatives.  Encourage students to take up opportunities to develop specific employment skills.  Etc. 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Why is this important? To help our students find a place in society. To help them acquire, reflect on, articulate and record their skills. To achieve a basic employability offer across the university through Careers Service and departments for specific career skills development. Also in the context of 2012, HEAR and KIS. 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Professor Mike Braddick “It’s about employability and not about getting a job. If you know what your employability skills are, then you may be able to decide what job you want to have” Professor Mike Braddick To add or change a slide background picture: 1. On the Format menu, click Slide Background. 2. On the pop-up menu under Background fill, click Fill Effects, and then click the Picture tab. 3. Click Select Picture, find the folder that contains the picture you want (preferably one saved at 72dpi), click the file name, click Insert, and then click OK. 4. Flexibility in the Academic Year Professor Paul White Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching

Why seek to increase flexibility? There are many more things we want our students to be able to experience, beyond their courses The system we moved to in 1994 is perceived in many places as too rigid Departments and faculties are looking at new ways of delivering activities 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Discussions so far: No one wants major upheaval, but … ,,, everyone has suggestions for change Question whether all years need to work to the same timetable General view that Christmas break + S1 exam period is too long But problems identified over dual students NEXT STEPS Setting up a Task and Finish Group 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) Professor Paul White Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching

Steering Group What is it? Plus Francine Lindley, Marcus Zientek, Anne Rogers What is it? A record of achievement in academic work – degree and modules A record of achievement in extra-curricular activity 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Why do it? National recommendation from a committee headed by Sir Bob Burgess - but Sheffield is in the lead in implementation Employers are very supportive of its use It can help to drive student behaviour as well as to record it We are ambitious for our students – but academic achievement is not enough 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Isn’t degree classification enough? Degree outcomes (classified degrees only) 2009/10 75% of Sheffield degrees were 1st or 2-1. 66% nationally. National discussions about moving from degree classifications to Grade Point Averages – watch this space! 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Internationalisation Gavin Douglas Head of Recruitment, Admissions & International Relations Welcome and introduction

2012 Proposition Gain a truly international outlook… A diverse mixture of people from many parts of the UK and the world……cultural agility to work in international settings...Sheffield Graduates will be active and concerned global citizens. Wasn’t exactly about internationalisation but various elements covered 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Internationalisation Strategy Global visibility of the University and what it stands for. A truly international University community. Promoting our research globally and enhancing knowledge transfer opportunities internationally Increasing the work we do to improve the lives of others through our international relationships, locally and abroad. Being developed under leadership of RH Currently out for consultation through Faculties Senate in March Still v much draft NB internationalisation strategy not international recruitment Four key objectives: 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Achieving objectives Enhanced support for international students eg Pre arrival Extra-curricular English language Many activities and initiatives detailed in the strategy for each of the four objectives While strategy not yet approved, some examples already possible that confirm direction of travel… Single out two significant L&T areas here, first is support for I students Pre-arrival, induction and orientation programmes and on-going support for international students. Eg SSD theme on pre-arrival L&T support Social and extra-curricular activities for international students eg RH sustaining support for SU society internationalisation activities English Language programmes to meet the needs of all international students and staff. Eg The potential development by the ELTC for provision of unrestricted modules in higher level English for international students. Internationalising our curricula xxxx Providing all students with an opportunity to develop/acquire a second language eg Languages For All brochure and Open Days, development of new facilities at 301 Glossop Road etc Increasing numbers participating in international exchange / placement /internship schemes. Eg reduced fees for study overseas (£2000) Developing global careers support 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Achieving objectives An international experience for all our students eg Internationalising our curricula Opportunities to develop a second language Increasing numbers on international exchanges / placements Second relates to the offer of an international experience for all our students eg Internationalising our curricula eg Global Engineering Challenge week - graduate attributes in MDH which include the need to be adaptable and responsive, with the ability to tolerate uncertainty, as well as a broad understanding of public health and global healthcare. Providing all students with an opportunity to develop/acquire a second language eg Languages For All brochure and Open Days, development of new facilities at 301 Glossop Road etc Increasing numbers participating in international exchange / placement /internship schemes. Eg reduced fees for study overseas (£2000) 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield

Top down and bottom up “Faculties and departments will have channels which we hope they will use to bring forward planned and new activities in support of (shared) international goals.” This may sound like it is all sorted and agreed in terms of what activities are needed to achieve our internationalisation activities. It is not! Strategy as a framework that Faculties and departments can use to shape own plans and activities in areas important to them Please get involved and give your views and feedback Consultations being channeled via Faculty Internationalisation leads 03/12/2018 © The University of Sheffield
