COMAS by Emily Dawson

Introduction Comas are when the brain cells stop working. If the brain loses oxygen or a person has a seizure , a stroke , an overdose and infections in the brain. The brain is working at its lowest stage of alertness. The brain or body cannot respond to touch , sound and pain. You are considered legally alive.

Different types of comas There are a few different types of comas. A person can go into one if the brain blood sugars are too high or if the brain loses oxygen. The doctor can put you in one if needed. The doctors can put you in a coma because if it will be easier to treat you if you are unconscious.

Michael Schumacher Michael was born on January 3rd 1969 in Germany. He was a one of the best formula one racing drivers of all time and won a record 7 world championships. In December 2013 Michael was in a skiing accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was placed in a medically induced coma for 6 months until 16 June 2014.

Facts During pregnancy in a coma the baby stops developing and this can cause the baby to be born with deformities, small organs, brain damage and heart problems .e.g. heart attack, liver and kidney failure. On August 6th 1941 little six year old Elaine Esposito went into a coma and woke up 37 years and 111 days later in 1978 but sadly died after she woke up. She now holds the world record for the longest time in coma.

Conclusion I really enjoyed doing my Genius Hour project. I learned lots of interesting facts about Michael Schumacher and about the longest time a person has been in a coma. I put a lot of effort into this project and I hope you all enjoyed it as much a I did.
