تعريف الاستزراع السمكي Aquaculture أو Fish culture أو Fish Farming جميع هذه المصطلحات هى مترادفـات لشيء واحـد أتفق على تسميته الإسـتزراع السـمكي باعتبار أن الأسماك هي أهم هذه الكائنات التي تستزرع الاستزراع السمكي هو تربية الأسـماك وتنميتها داخل أحواض أو برك أو أقفاص مائية بطريقة منظمة بحيث لا تستطيع الهرب منها مع توفير الغذاء الذي يكفل لها النمو والتكاثر ثم حصادها بعد فترة زمنية بطريقة منظمة أيضا تحقق أقصى فائدة إنتاجية وتحافظ على استمرار الإنتاج السمكي في المزرعة موسمياً أو على مدار السنة

لماذا الاستزراع السمكي؟ الاستزراع السمكي ضرورة اقتصادية تراجع كمية المصيد من البحار والأنهار سد الطلب المتزايد على البروتين الحيواني لمواجهة التزايد السكاني عملية تربية الأسماك تعتبر أكثر فائدة من محاولة صيدها من الموارد المائية الطبيعية كالبحار والبحيرات والأنهار وذلك للأسباب التالية : المزارع السمكية تستطيع توفير الأسماك الطازجة في أي وقت التحكم في كثافة الأسماك في المزارع ومن ثم التحكم في الإنتاج المزارع السمكية تستطيع توفير الأسماك المرغوب فيها

إمكانية التحكم في معدلات نمو الأسماك في المزارع الأسماك في الموارد المائية الطبيعية قد تتعرض للأخطار التي تهدد حياتها نتيجة وجود أعداء طبيعيين لها كما قد تؤثر المخلفات الصناعية وتلويث المياه على حياة وصحة الأسماك في بيئتها الطبيعية وعلى الجانب الآخر نجد أن جميع هذه العوامل والظروف واقعة تحت السيطرة في حالة المزارع السمكية مما يحقق الإنتاجية الأفضل

الاستزراع السمكي " الموضوع القديم الجديد ” نبذة تاريخية الاستزراع السمكي " الموضوع القديم الجديد ” الإنسان قد طـرق ذلك الباب منذ زمن بعيد ومارسته كثير من الشعوب قدماء المصريين (2500 قبل الميلاد) الصينيون (1122ـ1135 قبل الميلاد) الفينيقيون Phoenicians الايطاليون القدماءEtruscans (500 عام قبل الميلاد) الرومانيون معظم الدول الأوروبية (القرن السابع عشر)

الاستزراع السمكي في المملكة العربية السعودية بداية الإستزراع السمكي ترجع الى عام 1978 م وفى مطلع الثمانينات أنشئت أول مزرعة سمكية عقد التسعينات (انتشرت المزارع السمكية خاصة فى المنطقة الوسـطى والشـرقية والغربية) ومن أمثلة الأسماك التي تمت تربيتها بنجاح ● أسماك البلطي و المبروك والقرموط (وذلك في مزارع المياه العذبة التي تعتمد على المياه الجوفية) ● كما تم تفريخ عدة أنواع من الأسماك البحرية ( أسماك السيجان أو الصافيSiganus و ذئاب البحر Sea bass والهامور Groupers) بالإضافة إلى الروبيان (في مزارع المياه المالحة على ساحل البحر الأحمر)
