Essential Question- 3/22/18 What were the impacts of Industrialization in the 1800s?

Industrialization Industrialization: the transition from farming to factory based societies

Introduction- Welcome to your Rural Village Welcome to your small country village in England in 1700. Write the name (up to you) of your town on top, draw 6 houses, 1 church, 1 cemetery, 1 large area of shared farm land, and 20 trees.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the worksheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 1- Common Farming Lands Lost! The Enclosure Movement has combined little farms together to be more efficient. It also has forced farmers to move into our village. Erase half of our farmland, draw 5 new houses for the homeless farmers, draw 1 store.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 2- Water Frame and Factory The Water Frame (1773) was a machine that ran on water power, and could sow textiles (clothes) 20x faster than a human. Soon, the first factories were opened along rivers. Draw 1 factory along our river, 6 more houses for our new workers, and 1 church.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 3- Factories Expand in our Village! These factories are making us so much money, let’s build 3 more! Our people can buy clothing, tools, and supplies very cheaply now! Draw 3 factories along the river, 2 new stores, and 2 images of what our people can now buy cheaply (like clothes, tools, or dishes).

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 4- Building Tenements Our village is running out of space to build houses. Instead, we need cheap apartments. Tenements were urban apartments, but were very dirty, small, and had no running water for toilets. Life in these apartments was very unhealthy. Draw 2 tenement apartment buildings (see picture on right), add 6 graves to your graveyard for our people dying of diseases.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 5- Deforestation and Pollution Industry isn’t free. To continue building factories and houses we need to cut down half our forest for lumber. This is called “Deforestation”. Our factories have switched to coal power. They burn coal for fuel, and dump the used coal pieces into the river. Erase half our trees, add a smokestack (chimney) to each factory with lots of smoke (see pic on right), draw 2 images of factories polluting the river with coal.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.

Round 6- Child Labor and Alcoholism Children were the perfect workers for factories, they could fit into tiny machines to fix them. There were no labor laws protecting children in the factories. Thousands were injured or killed on the job. Many depressed parents worked 14 hour days. They looked for escape in a new alcohol in England called “Gin”. Add 5 graves to the graveyard for children who died in the factories, add 3 bars, add 1 image of alcoholism.

Check In- Follow these steps Take your phone- snap a picture of your town so far… Answer your reflection questions on the worksheet On the side of the sheet, write a short hashtag summarizing this step so far.
