Journal What is the different between single displacement reactions and double displacement reactions?
Today’s Learning Goal Write and balance double displacement reactions
Double Displacement Reactions In double displacement reactions, the ions of two compounds exchange places in an aqueous solution to form 2 new compounds. One of these compounds formed is usually a precipitate, an insoluble gas that bubbles out or a molecular compound, usually water. Example: AX + BY AY + BX
Formation of a Precipitate The formation of a precipitate occurs when the cations of one reactant combine with the anions from another reactant to form an insoluble or slightly soluble sompound Example: 2KI(aq) + Pb(NO3)2(aq) PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)
Formation of a Gas In some double displacement reactions, one of the products is an insoluble gas that bubbles out of the mixture. Iron (II) sulfide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen sulfide gas and iron (II) chloride. FeS(s) + 2 HCl(aq) H2S(g) + FeCl2(aq)
Formation of Water In some double displacement reactions, a very stable molecular compound is one of the products (such as water) HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
Combustion Reactions In a combustion reaction, a substance combines with oxygen, releasing a large amount of energy in the for of light and heat. The reactants product is water vapor. 2H2(g) + O2(g) H2O C3H8(g)5O2 3CO2 + 4H2O(g)
Example Complete and balance the following reaction: CH4 + O2 Answer: CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
Example Complete and balance the following reaction: C2H6 + O2 Answer: 2C2H6 + 7O2 4CO2 + 6H2O
