Challenges REU Students Face (and how we can help!) Melissa A. Burt 2016 REU Site in Climate Science Interns Colorado State University

Imagine… you are 20 years old, you’ve applied to and were accepted to an REU program. You’re excited to participate in a summer research experience, the knowledge you’ll gain, and the experiences that take place over the next 10 weeks… BUT…

Research Challenges Personal Challenges Adjusting to a new environment (town, institution, culture, etc.). Developing the appropriate time management skills to work in a flexible work environment. Acknowledging that the research process can be frustrating. Not meeting expectations of mentors. Personal Challenges Overwhelmed Family stress Temporary change to a nearby institution amounts to a change of culture

How can we support our REU students… Role Models Strong support network Collaboration Sense of belonging Open conversation Respectful communities Trust Be Aware One of our roles as REU managers to help our students respond and overcome these challenges
