Presentation transcript:

Using clinical decision support to improve imaging appropriateness Ensure appropriate imaging by leveraging point-of-care clinical decision support tools

What is clinical decision support? Clinical decision support (CDS): technologies that assist physicians in making timely and informed decisions in providing care, such as computerized alerts, condition-specific order sets, documentation templates, and diagnostic support

Why is clinical decision support important? Overuse and inappropriate use of many imaging tests may cause harm by unnecessarily exposing patients to excess radiation. Ordering appropriate imaging tests – particularly when facing time pressure constraints and when the evidence to support the decision isn’t easily accessed – can be challenging for many physicians. *CDS tools for imaging empower the ordering clinician—in collaboration with radiologists—to choose the right imaging test at the right time and for the right reasons!

How can your practice benefit from a CDS? More empowered physicians More engaged and educated patients Demonstrated commitment to appropriate ordering to patients and payers Reduction in inappropriate utilization patterns A streamlined image ordering process Decreased overall healthcare costs Increased collaboration with Radiologists

Five steps to improving imaging appropriateness in your practice 1 Familiarize yourself with CDS and its role in optimizing care delivery 2 Select an imaging area to improve Prepare your practice to adopt CDS for image ordering and appropriate use 3

Five steps to improving imaging appropriateness in your practice 4 Actively discuss imaging appropriateness with patients and begin making decisions about imaging orders together 5 Work with your electronic health record (EHR) implementation team to integrate CDS technology 8

The three-phase approach to implementing a CDS in your practice Select patient imaging data to be reviewed and rated for appropriateness by CDS. Phase 2 Review your ratings and educate yourself and your team on appropriate imaging as needed (e.g., Choosing Wisely resources along with other educational tools such as webinars, articles, podcasts and case studies). Try out a few strategies to improve image ordering. Phase 3 Collect new data and repeat the review. Complete a final report and if improvement was seen, make the strategy your new standard.
