GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012 GuaSEEAW Objectives GuaSEEAW project aims at implementing water resources balances at the local scale according the System of Economic and Environmental Accounts for Water. GuaSEEAW project main objective is to obtain detailed information on water resources allocation and efficiency within GUADIANA River Basin (Spain and Portugal territory); to demonstrate water saving potential by the identification of optimum management, technical and economic measurements with the view to halting desertification in Europe. GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012

Selection of Pilot Area 1. International basin (Spain and Portugal). 2. Under Risk of desertification. 3. With Intensive Agriculture by using surface & groundwater irrigation methods. 4. Inter-related with NATURA 2000 Network. 5. Pilot area in REDSIM Project. GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012

GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012 GuaSEEAW Activities 1.- Work Planning: From M1 to M3. Organisation of administrative, technical and management tasks. 2.- Data Collection: From M3 to M5. Analysis of data SEEAW requirements data. Data Collection. 3. Data Implementation in SEEAW: From M5 to M10. Data migration from official data sources to SEEAW. 4. Water Balance Building: From M7 to M11. Production of Water Balances. 5. Optimization of water allocation. Recommendations: M10 to M12. Identification of management, technological & economic measures. GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012

Main issues to be addressed 1. Defining the actual State of the Art in the EU water balances under development at EU level/ Existence of any kind of standard software supporting SEEAW implementation at EU level. 2. Improve knowledge of SEEAW data model structure. GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012

Existing hydrological data 1.-River Discharge 2.-Rainfall and Evapotranspiration and climatic data 3.-Groundwater Table 4.-Climatic Data 5.-Urban Abstraction 6.-Urban Consumption and returns 7.-Energy abstraction, uses and consumption 8.-Industrial abstraction, uses and consumption 9.-Agricultural abstraction, uses and consumption 10.-Rain Soil inputs and Outputs 11.-Soil to groundwater exchanges 12.-Storage 1.- Historical availability. 2.- Data collection frequency. 3.- Data format. 4.- Geographical unit. 5.- Data access frequency. 6.- Methods for data collection. GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012

GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012 Doubts / Question How can we access to the delimitation of the territorial units of analysis? The water used to generate balances is both blue and green water. How do SEEAW matrices difference these kind of waters? 3. How are considered virtual water flows, included in balances, in SEEAW? Definition in SEEAW of “water used”, “water consumed” and “water returned”? How does SEEAW consider the cost of “discharged water”, directly or indirectly, causing a deterioration that must be corrected in balances? GuaSEEAW Project Presentation Brussels, February 16th 2012
