Colonies in North America France controls Quebec to Louisiana England controls New England to Florida Russia colonizes the coast of Alaska Spain controls Mexico and Florida and the islands of the Caribbean

Africa

Europeans build forts along the west coast of Africa

They traded muskets, tools, and cloth for gold, ivory and slaves

Slave demand in the Americas increases when the encomienda system is abolished

The slave trade developed into a huge and profitable business

European slave traders bought their slaves from African rulers in exchange for textile, metalwork, rum, tobacco, weapons, and gunpowder

African rulers thus expanded further into Africa to fill the European demand

Middle Passage Journey of slave ships from western Africa to America where they were sold
