Warm up Answer the questions 1.Which of the following are the correct aims to warming up? To raise heart rate Lower breathing rate To mobilise the joints To increase temperature of the body To move blood away from the muscles 2. Is the following statement about dynamic stretching true or false? Dynamic stretching is stretching the muscles whilst moving them 3. What is the difference between a maintenance stretch and a developmental stretch? 4. Explain these 4 rules of programme design? Work muscles in pairs to keep them balanced Large muscles should be trained first Do the difficult exercises first Work the abdominal muscles at the end of the session 5. What are the HEA guidlines for improving health and improving aerobic fitness?

Sessions aims To conduct and assist in instructing an exercise session for selected clients To demonstrate effective communication with selected clients To demonstrate competence in monitoring and adapting exercises to suit different client ability levels

Research and make notes Task 2 Observation of an exercise session Task2.1 You will observe your teacher deliver an exercise session. You will need to take notes that relate to what makes for an effective delivery of an exercise session. Please consider the following: Before the start of the session The start of the session During the session and the roles performed by the instructor Ending of the session

Discuss and draw Task 2.2. Students are organised into groups of 4, and they must share the information that they gathered from the observation (5 minutes) Task 2.3. Each group must design a poster on A3 paper that clearly demonstrates how to conduct an exercise session. Group A: Design a spider diagram Group B: Design a poster (10 words, pictures, symbols) Group C: Titles, Subtitiles and Bullet points format Group D: Revision cards glued onto an A3 sheet

Conducting an exercise session

Start of a session 1 Pre Session Checks Availability of equipment Equipment is in good working order All cables are strong Floor is clear of equipment cables Temperature Ventilation

Start of a session 2 Health and safety checks Do you have any illnesses or injuries Have you eaten today Do you have any innapropriate clothing or jewellery Then explain the following. Fire exists and fire drill First aid kit, first aider and nearest telephone Availability of water Finally, explain: The training programme The process of instruction

During a session The aim of the session is to get the client working for as much as possible in a safe and effective manner. It is important that the client is supported and pushed to work as hard as they can within their limits. The instructor must perform a variety of roles.

COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY The client can understand and respond to your requests Communication is done verbally and non verbally (i.e. body language) Listen to your client and asses their level of knowledge before deciding how to deliver your instructions If a person is new to the gym you should keep things simple and use less technical language Use more technical language where appropriate

GIVE INSTRUCTIONS An instruction is providing information on how to perform a technique. When providing instructions, say what you want the client to do rather than what not to do. If you use the word “don´t”, for example, “don´t lock your knees” it may increase the chances that they will actually do it

DEMONSTRATIONS The instructor needs to give a demonstration to show the client how to perform the technique. Once a demonstration has been given, the instructor can explain the technique to the client and then let them practise to get the feel of the movement

PROVIDE MOTIVATION The reason most people do not achieve the results they want is because their motivation is too low: they give up when the going gets tough. You will motivate them with what you say, how you say it and by using positive body language. This will push them to work as hard as they can within the limits of their fitness

OBSERVE AND CORRECT The instructor will need to observe and correct the clients technique from a variety of positions by moving around the client. Once they have observed for a short period, feedback should be given about what they are doing right and then what parts need to be corrected

RESPOND TO CLIENTS NEEDS If a client has a problem with an exercise, then the instructor needs to correct it first by explaining and then by redemonstrating the technique. If they are still unable to perform the technique correctly, then the exercise needs to be changed

Ending of a session Once the session has been completed, after the cool down it is a good opportunity to ask the client how they think it went. Also, you can tell them how you thought they did. Once the client has left, you need to put any equipment away and report any damage to equipment and advise of any problems you encountered.

Role plays Task 3 You have been placed into groups of 3. Each student will have a different role. Note the following. Student A. The Assesor: You have the role of evaluating how good the instructor is at his job and will need to fill in a checklist Student B. The Exercise Instructor. You have the role of conducting the exercise session for your client Student C: The Client. You will read your task card and play the role of the client The session will have a duration of 40 – 45 minutes.

Training session review Task 4 Each student must conduct a Review of the training session from their own perspective.

What did the instructor do to assist in instructing an induction, resistance training, cardiovascular training and circuit training? How did he communicate effectively with his client? How he monitor and adapt exercises to suit the different needs of my client?

Key learning points Before a session starts, you need to check your environment, the client and tell them about the safety procedures During the session you need to support the client in the following ways Comminicate effectively Give instructions Demonstrate Provide motivation Observe and correct Respond to the clients needs At the end of the session ask your client for feedback about the session
