Five Themes Of Geography
Remember the 5 themes of U.S. History?? 1.Geography 2. Society 3. Politics 4. Economics 5. Morale
Well, there are 5 Themes of Geography: 1. Location 2. Place 3. Region 4. Movement 5. HEI (Human-Environment Interaction)
(There are 2 different types of Location) - Tells where a place is. (There are 2 different types of Location) ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION
- The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found. ABSOLUTE LOCATION - The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found.
Latitude and Longitude lines tell ABSOLUTE LOCATION.
A street address is also an ABSOLUTE LOCATION. Baines Middle School 9000 Sienna Ranch Road Missouri City, Texas 77459
- The location of one place in relation to other places. RELATIVE LOCATION - The location of one place in relation to other places.
When someone asks you where you live, you tell them you live “Near Houston” rather than saying, “in Missouri City.” Believe it or not, most people just don’t know where we are!
- Tells what it is like in a specific area. PLACE - Tells what it is like in a specific area.
PLACE Are there any interesting traditions in the area? Is it hot there? PLACE Are the winters bitter cold? Is it a dry climate, or does it rain a lot? Is it a crowded city? What types of plants grow there? What type of government do they have there? Is it a wide open prairie?
REGION - A group of places that have physical features or human characteristics in common.
The Rocky Mountains
The American Southwest
The Great Lakes
The Arctic
- The movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another.
Early humans chased herds of animals across continents.
In 2007, my family moved from Illinois to Texas.
Email, sending letters, and making phone calls are all forms of movement of ideas. Writing Letters
HEI - Human-Environment Interaction occurs because humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the world around them.
In the case of hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and flooding, humans have to adapt to the changes in their environment.
Humans clear land for new homes and neighborhoods.
Farming is another example of how humans modify the world around them.
