ECE 3000: Engineering Seminar Presentation Skills

Why presentation skills? 11/8/2016 Your success as an engineer is proportional to your communication skills. Presentation skills are an important part of information transfer. More and more job interviews require you to give a presentation. Senior project, thesis defense etc. Attending conferences and presenting your product.

Power Point Slides Professional appearance. 11/8/2016 Professional appearance. (Spellchecked, Title, Page numbers) Each slide revolves around one key aspect, whenever possible. Avoid cramming. Use pictures, graphs, and tables wherever possible. Use 16+ font always. Always use Bullet points and keywords. Do not write in paragraphs. People are not going to read through long sentences and if they have to, they can not listen to you at the same time.

Background: Wireless Sensor Node EXAMPLE Energy harvesting systems power wireless sensor nodes 3

Technical Execution: Review Coupled System Experiments: Chain Topology EXAMPLE Max increment factor=11.7 (Beam 2) C: Coupled, UC: Uncoupled (same location) Frequency and Phase synchronization, and increase in output power at higher excitation amplitude 4

Delivering a good presentation 11/8/2016 Know your audience. Practice!!!! How long are you going to spend on each slide? Set aside time for questions. Practice with a timer, alone and in front of friends, multiple times. Average adult attention span is usually around 20mins. Limit your talk to 15mins + 5mins for Q&A. Use your slides as a guide. Do not just read it. Be loud and clear, and maintain eye contact with the audience. If needed, add illustrations or animations. Please do not go overboard. If you have a physical device to demonstrate, it helps.

Presentation Contents 11/8/2016 Background/ Problem Statement What is the topic about? Why is it important? What have others been doing? Method What are you doing differently? What are the challenges? How are you overcoming the challenges? Results Summarize your results in graphs, tables, etc. If possible, show comparisons with other’s work. Summary slide and backup slides (for expected questions)
