INTRODUCTION TO THE MICROSCOPE

LEARNING GOALS I will measure the field of view for each objective lens on the microscope. I will use microscopes properly. I will draw scale representations of the images I see in a microscope. I will explain how the focal plane affects the image seen through a microscope.

Dry mount- two slides with specimen in the middle, no liquid. WORD BANK Field of view- what you see when you look through the eyepiece of a microscope. Dry mount- two slides with specimen in the middle, no liquid.

WORD BANK Focal Plane- The distance at which a microscope lens system focuses. Wet Mount- a slide using drops of water, a specimen in the middle, and a cover slip on top. Magnify- To make bigger

BRINE SHRIMP (sea monkeys) Do brine shrimp show all our characteristics of life? Can you observe them doing these things? How could we observe the tiny shrimp more closely to gather evidence they are alive?

ADDING YEAST The yeast you will put in with your brine shrimp has been mixed with a red dye called Congo red. It makes the yeast easier to see. Put one small drop of yeast on your brine shrimp slide. Observe at 100x then 200x.

RESULTS How did the brine shrimp and yeast interact? Is the feeding behavior evidence of life? What did brine shrimp do when you shined light into their habitat? Did you note any other evidence of life while observing the brine shrimp?
