The 1990’s Brave New World

The census recorded the population of Canada as 27,945,000 . Nunavut became Canada's third territory on April 1.

Economic Changes More jobs are created in technology due to the popularity of the computer By 1997, the economy begins to improve Many Canadians saw their standard of living increase. Due to over fishing in the Maritimes a ban was put on fishing. This caused job loss in Canada’s east. 1300 jobs are lost in Newfoundland when three plants had been closed down.

The Oka crisis The town of Oka was developing plans to expand a golf course and residential development onto land which traditionally been used by the Mohawk. It included pineland and a burial ground, marked by standing tombstones of their ancestors. Native Canadians protested against the government because wanted to build a golf course on Native burial ground. This is called The Oka Crisis
