One to Many Communication for College Students Email, IM, Telephone, Meetings, Mailing Lists How does one decide which to use for a given announcement? How frequently are these used? Are these tools sufficiently fully developed to meet the needs of students? This was to try to get a broad picture of the issue. “Zooming out before zooming back in”

Preliminary Interview Findings on Lists Allow for communication with a large, self-selecting group with common interests Average subscriptions of 3-15 lists Traffic constitutes from 15 to 90% of inbox volume Lurking is common (social awareness) Simplifies inbox sorting Anecdotal information too: * About how once a list was created people unsubscribed (bibletalk) * Sending two emails in one if groups overlapped (hannah)

User Goals Keep up to date about the culture and people’s interests. Discuss things with people who have similar interests. Learn about events get people to come to my events. Help other people, so if I need help people will listen to and help me. Build community around personal hobbies. Get information from the “experts” on a certain topic. Advise others with the ultimate goal of increasing one’s reputation. Find people who share certain common interests or traits. Avoid feeling silly/embarrassing myself in front of others.

Current List System “Found things haphazardly” “I think I can check who’s on the list, but I’m not sure how to do it anymore.” “Tried to create one as part of a club, and I couldn’t figure it out.” “I don’t even know what the digest feature is.” “I can’t check who’s on the list – once sent an email to the old committee members” Complicated subscription process

Project Goals Based Upon User Interview Findings Minimize lurking time for new users Simplify the subscription process Provide advanced functionality for advanced users, without burdening average users Make archive system more intuitive and navigable BASE THESE on USER GOALS when talking about them in presentation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up to date about the culture and people’s interests Discuss similar interests. Learn about events get people to come to my events. Help others Build community around personal hobbies. Get information from the “experts” / Advise - increasing one’s reputation. Find people who share certain common interests or traits. Avoid feeling silly/embarrassing myself in front of others.
