Natural Resources Grade 10 Geography

An Appreciation of the Earth and All It Provides Natural Resources An Appreciation of the Earth and All It Provides The Earth is a huge storehouse. It holds the water and food that plants need to grow. It has a great supply of other natural materials. Materials people use are called natural resources. Everything comes from something, and that "something" is our natural resources.

What is a natural resource? Natural Resource: materials that exist in nature that have material economic value. Natural resources are used to make food and fuel, and are used as materials in the production of finished goods. Examples are: Forests, fresh water and mineral deposits

Chapters we will be looking at… Forestry Water Fishing, hydro, pollution Mining Lumber, pulp and paper Minerals, fossil fuels

Renewable Resources Renewable resource: resource that replaces itself unless badly mismanaged. Example: trees grow to replace those cut down or lost to fire or disease; polluted air is cleaned by the environment.

Non-renewable resource Definition: Once they are removed from the Earth, they will not be replaced in our lifetimes. After they are extracted from the earth, they can be stored for a considerable length of time. Most non-renewable resources are not living organisms so the extraction and use of one resource will not impact other non-renewable resources. Examples: Mineral resources such as oil and gas, coal, copper National Geographic slide show and video

Sustain yield management Defn: Use of renewable resources at a rate that allows the resource to renew itself. A Few Examples: 1)the number of fish caught should not be greater than the number of fish reaching maturity. 2) The number of trees harvested for lumber/pulp and paper should not exceed the number of trees re-planted.

Sustainable Development Defined as: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Considers three aspects: Health of the Environment Health of the Economy Health of the Society -Brundtland Commission- 1987

Exports and Imports Export- A product or service produced in one country for sale in another country Exports EXit a country Examples: Wheat, Barley, Machinery Import- A product that is brought into a country from another country Imports come INto a country Examples: Vehicles, Electronics, Pineapples and Bananas
