Solids and Liquids

Pre-assessment What is a solid? What is a liquid? How can you tell a solid from a liquid?

Matter What is matter? Matter is on, in, and near the earth in three different states, solid, liquid, or a gas.

Introduction to solids A solid has a definite shape that does not change easily. Examples: salt, wood, gold, plastic, steel, stone, ice, and chocolate.

Valentine Candy Experiment Candy hearts were the solid Liquid Water, soda, vinegar

The experiment What happened when we tested our experiment? Did all three or at least one of the cups that had a solid in it become a liquid?

Introduction to Liquids Liquids flow or pour, must be kept in containers, take the shape of the container, and have a flat level surface. Examples of liquids are milk, soda, motor oil, paint, glue, and water.
