Zoology Chapter 1 Ms. Cox 2006-2007

What is Zoology? The study of Animals. It is a subset of the broad discipline of biology. Biology is the study of life. Let’s create a concept map of what we think we will study in Zoology.

Zoology covers? Entomology (the study of insects) to Ornithology (the study of birds) Animals are intimately linked to their environments. Ecology is the study of this relationship.

How is Zoology Structured? The current system was developed by Karl von Linne. It is binomial nomenclature. Everything is given a name, consisting of a genus and a species.

Taxonomy- the science of classifying plants and animals Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

Biodiversity The fact that there are millions of variations among the plants and animal of the world. Population of Geneva County in 2005 25,735 people, imagine if we were all the same. Yuck. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/01/01061.html
