March 5, 2018 Knight Time Points of Improvement:

March 5-6, 2018 Objectives: Analyze complex poetry using TPFASTT. Discuss elements of figurative language and tone in poetry. Catalyst: Perrine’s reading check Homework & Reminders: Portrait final 3.7/3.8 Heart of Darkness, y’all! Expect a reading check by the end of the week

Perrine’s: Figurative Language 2 (Symbol/Allegory) What is the difference between symbol and allegory (according to Perrine’s? Symbol “means what it is and something more, too” “so general in its meaning that it can suggest a great variety of specific meanings” “we should never assume that because the meaning of a symbol is more or less open, we may make it mean anything we choose” “[w]hatever our interpretation of a symbolic poem, it must be tied firmly to the facts of the poem” Allegory Text which “has a second meaning beneath the surface” Extended metaphor, “series of related symbols” “puts less emphasis on the images for their own sake [like symbolism does] and more on their ulterior meanings Meanings are pretty definite (unlike with symbols)

Perrine’s: Figurative Language 2 (Symbol/Allegory) “Digging” by Seamus Heaney Again, annotate the crap out of this one. What symbolism do we see? What emotional responses are evoked by the imagery?

Perrine’s: Tone “Picnic, Lightning” by Billy Collins Yet again, annotate the crap out of this one. TPFASTT Questions on page 806

Perrine’s: Tone “The Flea” by John Donne You guessed it: annotate the crap out of this one. TPFASTT Questions on page 812
