Presentation transcript:

Thought for the Day

Additional intro material I’ve posted on the course website an additional PowerPoint series: a survey of the electromagnetic spectrum it shows and talks about all kinds of ‘light’, from radio to gamma rays it’s show-and-tell style, a bit long for class but quite interesting please look at it in the next week

Problem Set #1 will go out by email all ROSI-registered emails wil be posted on website: www.physics.utoronto.ca/~phy485/ModOpt due Tuesday 2 October

Study groups to get a bulk email of interested students, please email me LIKE THIS: Subject: JKL PHY485 Study no content in the body to those who email me, I’ll send the whole list of email addresses of interested people (circulate your addresses) feel free to organize at end of class, those who wish still to join in

Today… waves, linearity of wave equation review of Maxwell’s review of Maxwell’s equations in media wave equation in dielectric and conducting media dispersion relation for plane waves complex dielectric function, index of refraction Lorentz model for dielectric function
