Brief History of the Arc de Triomphe

Napoleon had an ambition to make the capital of his empire the most beautiful city in the world. As a piece to this beauty, he created the Arc de Triomphe which was built between 1806 and 1836.

Dedication to Soldiers The inside walls of the monument lists the names of 558 French generals who fought with Napoleon, honouring the individuals of the Grande Armee.  Also inscribed on the shorter sides of the four supporting columns, you can see the names of the major battles (128) of the Napoleonic wars.

A Patriotic Symbol After world War I, the Arc further represented fallen soldiers. The Arc de Triomphe became the tomb for the unknown soldiers killed in the WWI which is represented in the base of the monument.

A Sign of Remembrance An eternal flame has been burning within the tomb of the unknown soldiers since 1923 to commemorate the fallen soldiers of battle and in remembrance and commemoration of Napoleon for what he brought for the citizens of France.

What it Represents Today The arch has become a symbol of nationalism and patriotism for all French citizens. The arch plays a major role in a variety of different major events, which bring forth a nationalistic and patriotic pride to all of France.
