Humans in the Biosphere Chapter 6 Unit 2

Renewable and Nonrenewable Can regenerate if they are alive or can be replenished if nonliving Not necessary unlimited Cannot be replenished by natural processes When depleted they are gone forever or it will take thousands of years before can be replenished

Sustainable Development A way of using natural resources without depleting them

Land Resources Soil Erosion: the wearing away of surface soil by water and wind. Desertification: turning a once productive area into a desert

Forest Resources Deforestation: loss of forests Effect: can lead to severe erosion

Fishery Resources Overfishing: harvesting fish faster than they can be replaced or reproduced Aquaculture: the raising of aquatic animals for human consumption

Air Resources Smog: a mixture of chemicals that occurs as a gray-brown haze Pollutant: harmful material that can enter the biosphere through the land, air, or water
