Their dry needles are a wonderful fuel, some get sick and dry out, and while under an immense fire they tend to emit great flames dozens of meters high into the air. This is what incinerated the southern houses of Beit Oren (ironically means “Pine Tree Manor” in Hebrew) עץ האורן הוא פצצת אש. מחטים יבשות על העץ ולמרגלותיו נדלקות בקלות, והאש מדלגת במהירות מצמרת לצמרת. אורנים לא מעטים סובלים ממחלות ומתייבשים. בשריפות חזקות שולחים האורנים לשונות אש שיכולות להגיע לגובה של עשרות מטרים. זה מה ששרף את הבתים הדרומיים של היישוב שנקרא באופן אירוני "בית אורן"

The road ascends up to the site of the deadly fire trap which killed above 40 people at once, while caught in a bus and in other vehicles, as viewed from Beit Oren הכביש ממשיך להתעקל מעלה. בתצפית מכיוון בית אורן ניתן לראות (במקום בו עומדים כלי הרכב) את הנקודה בה לכדה האש אוטובוס וכלי רכב נוספים, קוטלת את חייהם של מעל 40 בני אדם

The heat generated by the fire was so intense, that limestones' surface began crumbling במקומות אלה השריפה ייצרה חום עז כל כך, עד כי סלעי הגיר החלו להיסדק ולהישבר

A view to the east from Beit Oren shows the squally nature of the fire – burning the ground, suddenly changing direction leaving the northern part fresh green. During a fire, Pine Trees open their cones and release numerous seeds to the ground. This is the base for the forest self rehabilitation בעת שריפה, האורנים פותחים את אצטרובליהם ומשחררים זרעים למכביר. זהו הבסיס להתחדשות טבעית של יער האורנים.

Not everything is dark – in “Mishmar HaCarmel campground the main damage was to the pergola, and the “Hai Bar” zoological sanctuary was saved as well לא הכל שחור – בחוות "משמר הכרמל" נשרפה בעיקר הפרגולה, שהייתה זקוקה לשיפוץ ממילא. החי-בר ניצל, וברשות הטבע והגנים נושמים לרווחה
