Changes in Matter
Properties We can classify matter by the properties that it has We separate properties into two categories: physical and chemical
Physical Properties Anything that can be measured or observed without forming a new substance is a physical property These can be quantitative (has a number value) or qualitative (has a quality)
Chemical Properties Anything that describes how a substance reacts with another substance to form something new is a chemical property
Physical Changes A substance changes in form, but not in chemical composition Physical changes can be reversed Ex. Ice melting, chlorine being dissolved in water
Chemical Changes A chemical change will cause one or more new substances to be formed A chemical change can not be reversed Ex. Cooking food, mixing baking soda and vinegar
Indicators of a Chemical Change Change in temperature Change in colour Change in odor Formation of a precipitate (solid) Formation of bubbles (gas)
