Puritans Church formed the foundation of the Puritan Social Order All Individuals born with original sin God predestined some, the Elect, to be saved Strong sense of sovereignty of God and depravity of man Strive hard to live in accordance with God’s will

Puritans Only Saints could run the church or the government Had to be a member to participate in government Wanted to create a model for the rest of the world Must guard against moral lapses

Puritans Had a contract with God If they follow contract, God would grant them grace Civil government stems from a voluntary agreement by all church members Land granted by church based on family needs, size and skills valued by community Legally required to attend Church

Puritans The Scripture offered solutions to all problems of individual conduct government, social organization and education needed to understand scriptures Adherence to strict puritan laws showed salvation and prosperity Used government to enforce religious uniformity Parents must repress children’s willfulness and teach them obedience to God
