Purpose of visual Design To assess students’ ability to identify key information in a given situation To create an effective communication for a specific audience and purpose Communication products may include: Posters Advertisements Handouts

What is visual design? Graphic representation of information Uses pictures, colours, highlighted words, bolded words, large letters, catchy font, borders, to emphasize key points Direct, to the point, easy-to-access information Must convey a message Must be clear, organized, concise, and catch the target audience’s attention See comm 12 files are already made examples and scores

YOUR TURN! Visual Design Assignment: Read the situation below and create a visual design. Use a variety of text, visuals, and graphics to support the message. Underline words to indicate italics Circle words to indicate bold Use a box to indicate the look and placement of a graphic Scenario: You are a student at high school where the principle is thinking of installing a device that would prevent students from using their phones while in the school building. Task: Create an effective poster to inform people about the lunch hour meeting you have organized regarding this decision. Indicate that there will be a petition for people to sign showing their opposition to installing this device.  Your poster should encourage people to attend the meeting, and it should include information on both sides of the issue. The meeting will be held at lunch hour in the multipurpose room on Friday. 

Additional Practice Read the situation below and create an appropriate visual design. Use a variety of text, visuals and graphics to support the message.   You may use some of the following symbols in your visual design.  • Underline words to indicate italics • Circle words to indicate bold • Use a box to indicate the look and placement of a graphic Scenario: Pretend you are John Whittaker, a grade 12 student at Van Tech Secondary in Vancouver, BC. CTV News is reporting that the provincial government is thinking of raising the legal driving age from 16 to 18. Task: Create an effective poster to inform people about the town hall meeting regarding the change to the legal driving age and about the petition that will be available for people to sign to indicate that they support keeping the driving age at 16. Your poster should encourage people to attend, and it should include information on all the issues involved. Information for thee townhall meeting: June 20 at 7:00 pm at Trout Lake Community Centre
